Mamuju, W Sulawesi (Antaranews Sulsel) - The Indonesian Islamic Student Movement Organization (PMII) of Mamuju District, West Sulawesi Province, has urged the government to stop all illegal fishing practices in West Sulawesi.
Hundreds of students of PMII, along with fishermen, held a demonstration at the governor`s office in Mamuju on Wednesday to urge the government to stop all illegal fishing practices that endanger the ecosystem and marine resources.
The PMII also called on the Indonesian Military and Police to immediately detect all violations at sea, such as the use of fish bombs, trawlers, and all forms of fishing equipment that are banned.
"Illegal fishing is a problem often faced by this nation. Exploiting maritime resources causes losses to Indonesia`s economy," Sulfian Syam, coordinator of PMII action for Mamuju, noted here on Wednesday.
He also demanded that the government should ensure equitable distribution for all fishermen without corruption, collusion, and nepotism.
He further opined that the government should provide solutions and solve the problems related to fishing mechanisms faced by traditional and modern fishermen.
"Stop the discrimination of fishermen. Fishermen must become prosperous through a non-pledge program and the regulation on the catching area between traditional and modern fishermen and horizontal conflict should be solved early," he stated.
In response to the demonstration, Governor of West Sulawesi Ali Baal Masdar vowed to follow up on the protesters` demands.
